This is what a Los Angeles bike path looked like in 1900  Before it became a freeway. The plan was to start the path at the Green Hotel in Pasadena and end in Downtown Los Angeles, with nothing more than a 3% grade at any one point.  Smooth sailing for all those Edwardian Californians who would suit up in hats, ties, and ankle-length dresses, hop on a bicycle and pedal into that great 19th Century outdoor craze.
